Mission & Who We Are<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The Rural Sociological Society (RSS)<\/strong> is a professional association that promotes the generation, <\/span>application<\/span> and dissemination of social scientific knowledge. The Society <\/span>seeks<\/span> to enhance the quality of rural life, communities<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> and the environment, both in North America and elsewhere in the world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Our members study the social, demographic, economic, cultural, political, and environmental<\/strong> dimensions of rural life – work that informs policy, empowers communities, and shapes the future of rural regions in the U.S. and beyond.<\/p>\n

Our History<\/h2>\n

RSS was formally established on December 29, 1937, born from a lively discussion among members of the American Sociological Society\u2019s Rural Section. While the older generation wanted to stay with the American Sociological Association (then Society), it was a minority report headed by a younger generation that won the day.\u00a0<\/p> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\u201cIt is always young men who win the crucial issues. Old men may declare that war and dictate the terms of peace, but young men fight, and young men die for the causes in which they believe. Sometimes they win. December 28, 1937, was a day of victory for young men.\u201d
